Simmental and Red Angus provide the perfect match! The explosive growth and high production of the Simmental combined with the superior ease of maintenance and efficiency of the Red Angus offers all that we are looking for in a system supplying young cattle to the domestic market. There is also the bonus in overall performance gained through heterosis (hybrid vigour).
The mating strategy for our crossbred herd is kept very simple. All heifers are mated to Red Angus sires for their fist calf, with our heifers calving down at two years of age. Second calvers and older will have either a Simmental or Red Angus calf depending upon type, for example females that are more Red Angus in type are mated to a Simmental Bull and vice versa. We also find that every year we have at least 30 to 40 pure Simmental females surplus to stud requirements that we mate to a Red Angus sire. Perhaps pictures are the best way to describe the synergy of the two breeds and what we are achieving with our commercial cattle.
